Postdoc and Research Staff Positions in Data Science for Genomics

Join us and contribute to the GenomeIndia Initiative!

About open positions: Postdoc and Research staff positions are open in bioinformatics, a multi-disciplinary area combining computer science, mathematics and biology. Selected candidates will work in a collaborative project with Prof. Yogesh Simmhan and Prof. Chirag Jain at the Department of Computational and Data Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. This is a fast-paced technical position which involves research and development of novel cutting-edge computational and Big Data solutions to problems associated with interpreting large volume of DNA sequencing data. Candidates will have the opportunity to learn state-of-the-art topics in algorithms, Big Data and HPC systems, biological data science, and apply them to projects of national importance related to genomics and human genetics. There will be opportunities to collaborate with post-graduate students from diverse disciplines, develop new creative ideas, algorithms and software, run large-scale experiments using state-of-the-art compute facility and present results at international computational biology conferences. Past staff members have also gone on to do higher studies abroad at top universities.

Eligibility: Candidates should have a B.E. or B.Tech. degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Bioinformatics or related subjects within the past 5 years. Those with M.S. or Ph.D. degrees are encouraged to apply. Candidates must have a knowledge of fundamental data structures and algorithms. Candidates must be comfortable with Linux and have strong programming skills, preferably in C++ or Java. Past experience should reflect expertise in data science and dealing with large volume of data. Additional experience in multi-disciplinary academic or industrial projects is a plus. As this project requires strong multi-disciplinary expertise, candidate must be self-motivated to learn basic topics outside their area of expertise to be able to effectively collaborate with biologists. Candidates are also welcome to provide links to their open-source software and published paper(s), if any, in their applications.

The GenomeIndia Project: GenomeIndia is a pan-India initiative for Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) of the representative human population across India. The first large-scale study of its kind in the country, it is a collaborative effort by 22 organizations, coordinated by the Centre for Brain Research (CBR) at IISc. This project has been funded by the Department of Bio-Technology (DBT), with the aim of collecting over 1 petabyte of sequencing data from 20,000 individuals over the next 5 years. This knowledge will be used to develop precision medicine and predictive diagnosis to help improve healthcare in India.

The positions are open with a join date of December 1, 2020 and will be for a duration of 12 months or longer. Pay will be as per Government of India DBT norms, and based on academic qualifications and experience. Work-from-home option is available as per the prevailing COVID-19 situation.

How to apply? Interested candidates should send a single email to and with subject line “GenomeIndia Research staff: <Your Name>”. The email should include two attachments: a detailed resume and a short half-page statement of interest that suggests why you want to join and why you might be a good fit for this project. Appointments will be made on a rolling basis, as and when highly-motivated candidates are identified. More details of the research done by Prof. Jain and Prof. Simmhan are available at: and
