Introduction

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) will be hosting the ACM Winter School on Hybrid Cloud, co-sponsored by IBM Research India. Prof. Yogesh Simmhan from IISc and Dr. Amith Singhee from IBM Research are the coordinators. The school will span 6 days, from 9 to 14 Jan, 2020, and be held at the Department of Computational and Data Sciences (CDS), Seminar Room 102. We expect about 40 attendees from across India to participate in the school. The modules covers span Cloud as a service, virtualization and containers, application development on the Cloud, DevOps and platform services. Experts from IISc and IBM Research will lead the modules, and there will be hands-on lab sessions. There will also be two keynotes from leading researchers on state-of-the-art in Hybrid Clouds.

Logistics

Boarding and Lodging

Attendees will be provided with on-campus housing at IISc from Jan 8 at 12 Noon until Jan 14 at 12 Noon. In certain cases, where requested, attendees will be provided with an additional day of accommodation until Jan 15 at 12 Noon at a nearby hotel. All rooms will be on a same-gender twin-sharing basis. Since the rooms are provided at our guest houses where faculty and international visitors stay, attendees must maintain etiquette and good behavior.

Location Maps:

Note that it is a 20min walk from the guest houses to the CDS/SERC building. So plan to leave early. There are a few “Transvahan” electric autos that go across campus (Rs.10 flat rate), but their frequency is low and seating limited.

Attendees will be provided with breakfast and box lunch at the Winter School venue, and coffee/snacks during the breaks. You will be provided with mess coupons for dinner at the A Mess between 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM

Attendees need to make their own travel arrangements to/from IISc, Bangalore.

Event Venue

The school will run from 8:30AM to 6PM on each day at the CDS/SERC building, Seminar Room 102. There will be about 6 to 7.5hours of seminars and lab sessions each day. There will be breaks for breakfast (8:30-9AM), morning coffee/snacks (10:30-10:45AM), lunch (12:30-1:30PM) and afternoon coffee/snacks (3:45-4PM). Students must report to the school venue on time on all days, and sign the attendance sheet in the morning and in the afternoon to be eligible for the completion certificate.

Students must bring their own laptops to the school to participate in the lab sessions. We will provide a list of software that you should install on your laptops before you arrive. You will be provided with guest WiFi access, and remote access to cluster and cloud resources during the lab session. Students must follow proper guidelines when accessing such Internet and computing resources provided.

Schedule (Tentative)

Sessions are from 9AM to 6AM on all days, unless noted otherwise. Breaks are from 8:30-9AM, 10:30-10:45AM, 12:30-1:30PM and 3:45-4PM.

Students must attend all sessions fully to be eligible for the completion certificate, unless prior permission is received.

AI and Hybrid Cloud: A researcher’s peek at the technology relationship that will enable the Cognitive Enterprise

Artificial intelligence technology has seen disruptive progress in this decade. The same can be said for cloud computing. Businesses today stand facing competitive pressures and consumer expectations that are unprecedented. At the same time they have the tantalising opportunity to leverage these disruptive new technologies to transform into and meet these challenges head on. To some extent there has been an adoption of AI and cloud computing for limited business models and business operations, but the major transformation into is yet to come – as cloud computing matures into the hybrid model of private, public and multi cloud.
In this talk we will look at some research opportunities that lie at the intersection of AI and Hybrid Cloud and will be pivotal technology enablers for the transformation of a digital enterprise into a cognitive enterprise.
And yes, we will touch upon what is meant by a cognitive enterprise in this context.
